Absolutely Amazing Addends

Absolutely Amazing Addends
addends patterns, base ten blocks, Mortensen More Than Math top tray,

Absolutely Amazing Addends will show you how to use addends to make addition easy. Understanding Addends makes math child's play.  This a picture book for story time, it has lots of bright colors and pictures for toddlers to look at, as well as a few activities to engage them and make learning basic mathematics fun. This would be a great book for a bedtime story not just at "math time".

Here is a preview of Amazing addends and my workbooks:

Seven (7) Absolutely Amazing Addends

Somehow the public education system failed to include addends in their curriculum. Many of you have never really heard the word.  "Addends for ten" for example, are simply two single digit numbers that add up to ten.

Once the child understands basic concepts like numbers are made up of other numbers and all the single digit numbers want to be ten. Ten want to be hundreds. Hundreds want to be thousands.

A great whole brain exercise  that puts the child in a position where they can not fail is to build all 25 addends using the top tray. Get creative. DO this exercise several times a week, don't just use the trays build things.

Simply put, an addend is a number added to another number (one other number), there are 45 addends making up the numbers two (2) thru eighteen (18). Here you can see 24 of the 25 addends thru 10.  Which one is missing?

Use the tray itself for expediting learning, you can play games where students race each other and see how fast they can build all of these combinations.  You can also use this as a two handed warm up exercise to get class/lessons started off right and get their brains warmed up for more fun math.

This is like learning scales on the piano.  But it makes math easier later on because cognitive load is lowered by making math facts available for instant recall, no computation or counting required.

With addends you get three facts in one.

Fourteen for example:

6 + 8 = 10 + 4
(10 + 4) - 8 = 6
(10 + 4) - 6 = 8

This is visually obvious. How do you separate addition and subtraction? You don't unless you use symbols only methods with work sheets that only show sums but never point out the obvious.

Absolutely Amazing Addends is for students of all ages but was made specifically for the 5 and under crowd. It has a few games and activities to help you teach this basic concept to your toddlers as well as some practice problems at the end.  In addition to (see what i did there?) Absolutely Amazing Addends, the Wildly Wondrous and Wonderful Workbooks will give your child/students/learners 200 practice "problems" to reinforce their understanding of addends and addition.

1 + 9 Absolutely Amazing Addends

The Importance of Addends can not be overstated. It should be foundational learning when teaching the mathematics, especially to very young children.  Start out with blocks and fingers and then progress to "mental math" where they can do it in their heads rapidly and flawlessly.

There are many games and activities that can be used for learning addends what's under the cup is a universally favorite game.

If you don't have blocks pictures are the next best thing. Numbers and letters are supposed to put images in your head. With Numbers the only "picture" we get is the symbol for the number. Here we can see the one and the nine coming together to make ten.

Play with purpose.

The online version of Absolutely Amazing Addends has links to webpages and Youtube videos.  Just look for the red play buttons.  They take you to short videos that show you how to play with base ten blocks so that the concepts are easily understandable to students of any age.  They can see hear and hold the numbers in their hands.

Absolutely Amazing Addends will be a great addition to your homeschool. Get your preschoolers started off right.
