Base Ten Block Crash Course TRAINING

In this base ten block crash course training, i break all the rules of presentation, often only give one example instead of three...flow from one thing to another in a manner that may confound those who want a linear approach starting with addition. Enter using your unique password.

This part of the $97 training is 3:48:12 long edited to cut out all the "getting to know you" parts with the participants and breaks. No fluff and feathers, and it moves from topic to topic rapidly. You should have a set of base ten blocks and pencil and paper so you can take notes. Don't be afraid to pause the recording. 

The emphasis is on play. This star cruiser taught a lot of multiplication though, 3s, and 4, and 5s, and 7s.  This is what i mean when i say build stuff and count it.  These photos should inspire you and your students to build cool creations using your imaginations. he student used lots of 5s and 10s because he knew he was going to have to count it...

What do we when doing math? COUNT. Your "job", if you can call it that, is to turn their creations into learning situations. We are creating efficient counters. Think of all the questions we can ask. Tasks we can give. Count the 7s by sevens, how many 4's, count by four. If there are 30 fours i instantly know that's 120. How long is it? How wide? How tall? How do you know?

Count over and over again with different creations, towers or buildings or whatever. 19² = 361 as easy as 2 x 2 = 2² = 2 + 2 = 4. i see a little orange square, made up of two little orange rectangles...or maybe just four green ones, how about you?

Mushin (無心) there's a concept Maria didn't teach me. "No thinking".
6 x 8 = 48. No counting fingers, no adding. That's how you get there but you get there through play. Not with flash cards and and worksheet drills.  

i start with factoring polynomials...the basic premise is all we can do is count and basically that means all we can do is add. Nice loop though, it ends where we started by adding a negative. Pause when necessary and play along with your base 10 blocks. In other words participate.

Understanding is greatly enhanced when you get your hands on the blocks, don't just watch and listen, play along.

The training covers the importance of mastering the 45 addends and 400 multiplication facts. i even throw distance formula in there just because i can. Like i said it is a whirlwind crash course...which should be followed up by more training.

BONUS LESSON.

Here is a rare example of a student's first introduction to factoring polynomials caught on video.  We've already done a three period lesson but we are using math blocks that are not as excellent for teaching algebra as the ones i like. Here you get a little taste of why.

In fact, i found out "they" don't even show you the blocks when they teach algebra which they introduce LATE; they don't introduce algebra early to make math fun and easy even though they call it Math You SEE. Meantime i encourage you to introduce algebra early.  The only thing stoping you is fear and your bad experiences. As you can see any little bot or girl can do it. No tears no fear. i show you how in video after video of unrehearsed math enrichment sessions.
